What is Holistic Web Design and Why Does It Matter?
If you've landed on my website, you've probably noticed I use the words "holistic web design" quite a bit. And you might be wondering what it actually means.
So I thought it was about time that I’d explain my approach and why building a website holistically is so important to me!
The Problem with Traditional Web Design
Your website is not a standalone thing. It lives inside an entire ecosystem, your brand, your social media, your marketing, your customer journey, your competitors, your industry.
And yet, most web designers treat it as if it does exist in isolation. They focus purely on the website itself: the layout, the colours, the fonts. They deliver something that looks beautiful, hand over the keys, and move on.
The problem? A website that's designed without considering the bigger picture will almost always fall short. It might look great, but it won't work the way you need it to.
That's the gap holistic web design fills.
So, what is Holistic Web Design?
Holistic web design means looking at your entire business landscape, not just your website, and designing something that fits and works within all of it.
When I start working with a client, I don't just listen to what the client expects to see on their website, but I ask them lots of questions to truly get their brand!
Questions about their online presence, their ideal customers, their current challenges and how they are planning to send people to their website.
There is so much more than just a pretty design and colours when you build your site!
Before I even look at designing, this is what I research:
Your brand: what is your product or your business all about? What is the feeling that you want to evoke when someone navigate to your website? Who are your customers? Are your colours and typography in line with all of this?
Your marketing assets: what else do you have out there? A website needs to work with your other marketing, not against it or independently of it, so I make sure that I understand what else you are doing from a marketing perspective.
Your social media: I look at your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, wherever you're showing up. I make sure that I understand your tone of voice and plan a website that reflects your style. Whoever follows you on Instagram should land on your website and feel like they're in the same place! And if your social media could be stronger, I'll tell you that too. I'm not just your web designer. I'm looking at your whole digital presence.
Your competitive landscape: Who else is doing what you do? What are they communicating? Where is the gap that you can own?
Your customer journey: How does someone find you, what do they see first, and what path do they take to become a client or customer? Your website needs to be designed around that journey, not around what looks impressive in a portfolio.
Only once I understand all of that do I start designing. Because the website has to make sense within everything else you're doing, and ideally, it brings it all together.
Why Does This Matter for Your Business?
Because your potential customers don't experience your business in silos.
They might discover you on Instagram, check out your website, Google your name, read a blog post, see a post you shared on Facebook, and then decide to get in touch. That entire journey needs to feel consistent, trustworthy, and clear.
If your Instagram has a warm, personal tone but your website feels cold and corporate, that's a disconnect.
If your website is beautiful but your social media looks outdated, that creates doubt.
If your website is up and running but your messaging is unclear or doesn't match what you're saying elsewhere, people will leave without contacting you.
A holistic approach makes sure that everything works together, so that no matter where someone encounters your business, they get the same clear and compelling message.
What This Looks Like in Practice
When I work with a client, my first step is always a deep-dive consultation, not just about the website, but about the whole business.
I ask questions like:
What platforms are you active on, and what does your content look like right now?
Who is your ideal customer and where do they hang out online?
What is your product or service, and what makes it unique?
What is your competitors' online presence like, and how do you want to position yourself differently?
What does the customer journey look like from first discovery to booking or purchase?
Are your marketing efforts consistent across all touchpoints?
From there, I build your website and frequently check in with you to make sure that we are on the same page!
And if I notice things along the way that could be improved, your Instagram bio, your content strategy, the way you're describing your services, I'll mention it. Because that's what a holistic approach means. I'm invested in your whole business, not just the deliverable.
Why I Work This Way
My background is in investment banking, a world built on systems thinking, efficiency, and seeing how every moving part connects to the whole. When I transitioned into web design and digital marketing, that way of thinking came with me.
I can't look at a website without thinking about the business behind it. I can't design a homepage without thinking about where that visitor came from and where they're going next. And I can't hand over a finished website without knowing it genuinely serves the business it's meant to represent.
That's what holistic web design means to me. And it's why clients walk away with something that not only looks beautiful, but actually works.
